Tired of workshops where attendees just zone out?
Here’s how to truly engage them.
1. Set an intention before you set a script. And be comfortable with deviating from the script, but not from the intention.
2. The people who show up already have an interest (and sometimes lived experience) in the topic. Don’t miss the opportunity to help them learn from each other as much as they learn from you.
3. Self --> group --> Class…. Get people to reflect on something themselves, then feed their best insights into a group conversation, and finally the best group insights are presented to the class. If you use this format, valuable ideas (and discussion) will rise to the top.
4. End with individual commitments. People want to continue the conversation. Make them put in the effort to think about what they can give as well as get.
5. Before running the workshop, sense-check the flow with others in your space. What are you missing? What are you not accounting for?
6. Simple is better.
